As part of the activities of the Circular Economy Working Group, BCSD Portugal responded to a questionnaire in public consultation of the Sustainable Products Initiative underway in the European Commission. The initiative aims to contribute to the revision of the Ecodesign Directive and propose additional legislative measures, aimed at making products placed on the market more sustainable (more durable, reusable, repairable, recyclable and more energy efficient).
This initiative intends to contribute to the establishment of EU-wide minimum sustainability and/or appropriate information requirements for specific product groups, as a priority those identified in the context of the value chains present in the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, such as electronics and ICT equipment, textiles, furniture and high-impact intermediates like steel, cement and chemicals (the initiative will also integrate the issue of the presence of harmful chemicals in these products). The proposed Directive will be announced in the fourth quarter of 2021.
