  • BCSD Portugal launches the Portuguese version of the CEO Guide to the Circular Bioeconomy , which includes six business examples developed within the scope of the Bioeconomy Working Group
  • The theme will be the focus of the event on the 23rd "Conversations on Sustainability - Circular Bioeconomy: innovating for a sustainable economy"

BCSD Portugal is today launching the CEO Guide to the Circular Bioeconomy, which aims to give business leaders an understanding of the concept and the opportunities that the Circular Bioeconomy has to offer the private sector. The recognition that natural capital is finite is forcing companies to adapt their activities and value chain operations to incorporate the principles of the Circular Bioeconomy.

The CEO's Guide to the Circular Bioeconomy identifies the five urgent environmental priorities: 1) climate change; 2) resource scarcity; 3) biodiversity loss; 4) land use change; and 5) food loss and waste and presents a common solution for all of them - the Circular Bioeconomy.

Its Portuguese version includes six examples, developed within the scope of BCSD Portugal's Bioeconomy Working Group, by the companies Cortadoria Nacional de Pêlo, EDP, Jerónimo Martins, Lipor, PRIO and The Navigator Company, along with other successful international business cases.

Within this panorama, the focus of the second edition of Conversations on Sustainability, which takes place on February 23, will revolve around the concept of the Circular Bioeconomy, the challenges it imposes on companies, as well as the opportunities it has to offer the private sector, and the planet. The panel of speakers will include Inazio Martinez de Arano (European Forest Institute), Hermano Rodrigues (EY-Parthenon), Fernando Ventura (Jerónimo Martins Group), Laura Costa (The Navigator Company) and Marisa Silva (Ministry of the Environment and Climate Action).

Regarding the Guide, the Secretary General of BCSD Portugal, João Wengorovius Meneses, recalls that "Faced with our current development model, which is highly extractive and polluting, the European Green Deal, presented about a year ago as the European Commission's main bet for growth and employment until 2030, places the preservation and recovery of natural capital at the center of the European political agenda and highlights the urgency of the transition to a new development paradigm, based on the principles of the circular bioeconomy, namely nature-based solutions."

He adds: "The necessary transformation will require large-scale innovation along companies' value chains in order to create sustainable business models, regenerative if possible. However, the Circular Bioeconomy is not just a challenge for companies, it must involve all sectors of society."

The CEO Guide for the Circular Bioeconomy is the Portuguese version of the CEO Guide for the Circular Bioeconomy, launched on November 7, 2019 by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) in collaboration with The Boston Consulting Group, and signed by 16 CEOs of the world's leading companies.
